While not a traditional campground, the railroad serves as a primary provider of 'Wilderness Access' for backpackers and hikers, offering flag stops at Needleton and Elk Park to access the Weminuche Wilderness and San Juan National Forest. The company also operates the historic Grand Imperial Hotel in Silverton and provides long-term parking for RVs and passenger vehicles at its Durango depot.
